UNESCO/IHA GHG Research Project Workshops

The Greenhouse Gas Research Project is hosted by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), in collaboration with the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO.

Two scientific workshops on the Greenhouse Gas Status of Freshwater Reservoirs have been hosted by UNESCO in 2006 (Paris, France) and 2007 (Iguassu Falls, Brazil), as part of UNESCO IHP-VI (2002-2007) and continued under IHP-VII (2008-2013). One of the conclusions was to focus on increased research and better understanding of the processes and key parameters leading to the emission of methane from tropical reservoirs.

This work has been followed up by a meeting in Paris in January 2008 for the finalization of a Scoping Paper (also available for consultation within this website) and the following Workshops:

  • Risk Assessment Tool Workshop
    UNESCO-IHP – Paris – France
    6-7 October 2011
Main objective of the workshop: to define the model specifications and to draft the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the development of an empirical model (GHG Risk Assessment Tool).

  • China Regional Workshop - The Application of the UNESCO/IHA GHG Measurement Guidelines
The Three Gorges Project Hotel - Yichang, Hubei – China
    7-9 April 2011
Main objective of the workshop: to describe the present state of development of the UNESCO/IHA GHG Research Project to the Chinese scientific and technical community and to and perform practical exercises on developing GHG Measuring Programme Planning (Monitoring Strategy), allowing the possibility of exchanging knowledge and discussing possible ways for collaborative efforts.

  • India Regional Workshop - The Application of the UNESCO/IHA GHG Measurement Guidelines
Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee Greater Noida Campus (IIT Roorkee) - India
    4-5 April 2011
Main objective of the workshop: to describe the present state of development of the UNESCO/IHA GHG research Project to the Indian scientific and technical community and to and perform practical exercises on developing GHG Measuring Programme Planning (Monitoring Strategy), allowing the possibility of exchanging knowledge and discussing possible ways for collaborative efforts.

  • Workshop: "From Measurement to Modelling: Interfaces Between the Field Data and the Predictive Modelling Tools"
03-04 August 2010 in Oak Ridge, USA
Main objective of the workshop: to discuss the interfaces between the field data and the predictive modelling tools in order to provide guidance to the application of the UNESCO/IHA GHG Measurement Guidelines to a set of representative reservoirs, and to the development of predictive modelling tools to assess the GHG status of unmonitored reservoirs and potential new reservoir sites.

  • Field Measurements and Data Analysis Workshop
    Montreal, Canada
    14-15 September 2009
Main objective of the workshop: to discuss and provide guidance for the development of the Field Manual and of the Calculation Manual (included as separate chapters of the UNESCO/IHA GHG Measurement Guidelines)

  • Site Selection and Database Workshop
    São Paulo, Brazil
    03-04 May 2009
Main objective of the workshop: to discuss issues related to the basic structure of the database, data to be included, confidentiality, intellectual property, reservoir site selection criteria and representativeness, and other related issues.
