IHA responds to the proposals to establish the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

In response to the current proposals to establish an International Renewable Energy Agency that does not recognise the potential of hydroelectricity as a source of renewable energy, IHA has responded by sending two open letters to both the the German Ministry for Technical Development (BMZ) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU).

In particular, IHA raises two important issues in the letter that are extremely important to the Association and its members:

1. All sources of renewable energy should be included in the scope and mandate of IRENA, provided that they are developed and utilised according to appropriate sustainability criteria. A serious move towards fostering progress in renewable energy must have at its core a clear and impartial definition of renewable energy.

2. Any initiative that aims at fostering progress in renewable energy should operate transparently and remain open to expertise that exists among a wide range of stakeholders, including non-governmental bodies such as the partner organisations of IREA.
