The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is looking to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer. Reporting to an international board of elected representatives, the CEO will, together with a staff of highly skilled professionals, be instrumental in advancing sustainable hydropower’s role in clean energy systems, responsible freshwater management and climate-change solutions.
IHA is a non-profit organisation working with an international network of members and partners, covering more than 100 countries. IHA’s work and contractual responsibilities are carried out through two subsidiary companies limited by guarantee (International Hydropower Association Ltd and IHA Sustainability Ltd), and the CEO acts as the principal director of both of these legal entities.
IHA’s head office is based in the UK, in London (Sutton). It has a national liaison office in Beijing, China, and a regional liaison office for South America, in Iguassu, Brazil-Paraguay. Its biennial Word Hydropower Congress attracts a broad range of stakeholders from the hydropower industry, governments, the financial sector, civil society and academia. This international event represents a platform for IHA’s work programme, which also follows a two-year cycle, and a sounding board for future work priorities and partnerships.
IHA has three work pillars: knowledge-building, sustainability capacity-building, and communications and outreach. This work is conducted in collaboration with IHA members, financial institutions, international organisations, development agencies, academic institutions and multi-stakeholder groups.
The ideal candidate for the role will bring a unique blend of diplomacy and communication skills, political acumen and managerial competencies. She/he will also have a passion for renewable energy, hydropower and the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
- Directing and managing the activities of IHA and the two subsidiary companies.
- In conjunction with the board, developing and implementing the strategy of the organisation.
- Leading the staff (currently 20+ employees), making sure IHA continues to add value to its members.
- Overseeing the financial and human resources of the organisation, as well as its long-term stability and growth.
- Ensuring relevant expertise exists within the IHA team or is readily accessible, for example, through member organisations.
- Representing the organisation on behalf of its members in dialogue with external stakeholders, international organisations and civil society.
- Maintaining an active network and participating in international discussions on topics of hydropower and, more generally, sustainability, energy, water and climate – utilising highly developed diplomatic and representation skills.
- Driving business development by articulating a strong business case for driving membership recruitment and retention and seeking new sources of income for the organisation.
- Building a strong team and addressing issues related to managing, motivating and growing talent within the organisation – ensuring a robust staff and planning for succession.
- Overseeing the organisation and success of the biennial World Hydropower Congress for its members, which is also a key source of income.
- The board is eager for the CEO to further grow the Association’s reach and membership as well as its impact.
- The future CEO will also be expected to continue to grow the organisation over time from a human capital point of view and to expand its product offering and value for money.
- The board expects the organisation to grow further its revenue streams outside of membership fees.
Skills, qualifications and experience
Candidates for this position will be evaluated against a set of ideal experiences and critical leadership capabilities:
- Ten+ years of experience in global public affairs – ability to engage and work with representatives of corporations, governments, financial institutions, environmental and social NGOs, international organisations, United Nations programmes, and other entities involved and/or interested in developing policies pertaining to water, energy and hydropower.
- Ten+ years of leading diverse teams – Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and develop a small, professional complement of staff in a demanding environment.
- Experience in the water and power sector – A knowledge of energy systems, renewables, and hydropower especially. Among many topics, this includes for example a broad understanding of financing, developing and operating hydropower facilities to generate, transmit and deliver electricity. A general awareness of the engineering, economic, environmental and social factors involved in developing and operating hydropower. An understanding of the future outlook for the transition to a low carbon economy, and a passion for the essential role hydropower has to play in the future energy mix, in the responsible management of fresh water, and in climate-change solutions.
- Experience in planning international meetings – Ideally some experience in the planning and management of international conferences and similar meetings of a diverse range of experts and policy makers.

- Ability to work with a volunteer board, representing a wide range of members in a complex, multinational environment.
