Eskom

Eskom is a state-owned electricity utility with an installed capacity of 48 GW (as at September 2017), generating approximately 95 per cent of South Africa’s electricity, predominantly from coal with a smaller portion from nuclear, gas, hydro, solar and wind.  This is the equivalent of approximately 40 per cent of the total electricity consumed across Africa.

Eskom has 3,324 MW nominal hydro generation capacity, of which 2,724 MW is pumped-storage. Eskom was one of the earliest recipients of the IHA Blue Planet Prize in 2003 for the Palmiet pumped-storage scheme, highlighting its commitment to sustainability.
