About the Congress

What is the 2017 World Hydropower Congress?

A biennial event one of the most important gatherings for hydropower professionals and decision-makers.  A platform, bringing together initiatives from government, business, finance and civil society, to help deliver better hydro and ultimately, better development for all.  This high-level event is intended to chart the course for hydropower development and operations over the coming decade, with the aim to ensure reliable and resilient water and energy systems for everyone.  The congress aims to ensure that hydropower can make the greatest possible contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other international milestones, while managing the challenges of a changing climate.

When does the Congress take place?

The actual Congress runs from Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 May but some additional workshops, tours and invite-only events are scheduled to take place before and after the main Congress on the 7, 8 and 12-15 May, please view the Congress agenda for more information.

Where will the Congress be held?

The Congress will be held at The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa. Other locations around Addis will be used for our evening functions.

Do I have to be invited?

No, the main three-day Congress is open to anyone who buys a ticket and would like to attend but we would highly recommend that you work or have a keen interest in the hydropower industry.  There are however some additional events, either side of the congress, that are accessed by invitation only.

How much does a ticket to the Congress cost?

Workshops are an optional extra and cost USD 99 each. There are four workshops across the two days prior to the Congress on the 7 and 8 May.

Evening dinners are also optional but highly recommended. They cost USD 25 each, and non-delegates are welcome to come to these evening events. The official welcoming dinner is on the 9 May and the closing dinner takes place on 11 May.

Are discounts available?

We offered early-bird tickets until the end of February. This has now expired.

What can non-delegates attend? 

Non-delegates are able to join the opening and closing dinners AND post-Congress tours. You are able to book up to three additional people for dinners when booking your full-price delegate ticket, at a cost of USD 25 per person per dinner. If you have already booked your ticket for the Congress and would like to attend the workshop(s) and/or dinner(s), please email us at

Where can I buy my ticket or register my interest?

You can register with us and buy your congress ticket by clicking the ‘Register’ button on our website. There is also a link to this on the Fee page, under the ‘About’ tab.

How can I attend an evening event or workshop?

You can either buy a ticket at the same time as purchasing your Congress ticket, or you email us at and buy additional tickets for workshops and evening events.

Where can I see an agenda for the conference?

Please see full programme for each day of the congress on our website here. There are additional activities which you can find on our ‘Events’ dropdown menu where you can find information about pre-Congress Workshops, post-Congress Tours and Dinners.

Does the registration fee include accommodation?

The booking fee does not include accommodation. We have information regarding our recommended hotels in the logistics area of the website under 'Accommodation'. The hotels listed have preferential rates for delegates; please mention you are part of 2017 IHC, or use the links provided to benefit from these set-rates.

Are meals included in the cost of the conference?

Tea and coffee breaks are included in the price for each day, as well as buffet lunches.

How do I let you know my dietary requirements for opening and closing dinner events?

Before the Congress

How do I know if there are still places left?

You would not be able to purchase tickets if the Congress was sold out.

Can I sign more than one person up at a time?

You can select multiple people for the evening events but the congress however requires several support documents, for security purposes, so registration has to be done one at a time.  If you have a multiple delegates you need to sign up, please contact us at and one of us will assist you.

Can I purchase a ticket to attend the conference for just one or two days only?

No, unfortunately our tickets are a standard price permitting access for all three days.

When will I recieve my e-ticket?

If you book online, you will receive your e-ticket by email shortly after buying a Congress ticket. Please print out a copy for registration in Addis Ababa on the 8 or 9 May. During the registration process, you will create a username and password which allows you to enter your account to view/print your ticket at a later date.

Can I share a ticket with others in my company, so we can attend on one day each?

No, unfortunately for security reasons the venues we are using require delegates to wear photo ID badges.  It would not be feasible to process these with more than one delegate associated with the same ticket number. 

How do I book my focus sessions?

You can register your interest in a focus session during the registration process or any time you access the event portal using your login details.  There is also a link under the ‘About’ menu, to the ‘Fees' page.  PLEASE NOTE: Although every effort will be made to accommodate focus session choices, this facility is only intended to provide us with an idea of numbers wishing to attend each session.

During the Congress

Conference logistics

It is a 15-20 minute drive from the airport to the UN Conference Centre. All of our recommended hotels are within short walking distance to the UN Conference Centre. Taxis will be readily available from outside hotels, if needed.


What is the Congress language? Will interpreting be provided?

There will be interpretation available for all sessions in French and Mandarin. The handbook will also be available in English, French and Mandarin.

Will I need to wear my ID during the Congress?

Yes, you will be given a lanyard, an ID badge and a plastic wallet which you will need to wear your ID badge for the duration of the Symposium and at all sub-events. 

Will the Congress be filmed and photographed?

Some sessions and workshops will be filmed, and there will professional photographers on site throughout the Congress who will capture the majority of the sessions. There will also be UN staff photographers who will be taking photographs of delegates, printing and displaying a selection of them for sale (at top of the staircase on the Ground level leading to the lower level).

I'm afraid we do not have any volunteer opportunities available at the moment but we will update the information here is anything opens up!

How can a Country/City tender for the 2019 Congress?

The process for this has already started and the host country might even be announced at this years' Congress. If you are interested in hosting the 2021 Congress, please write to Greg Tracz to register your interest.

After the Congress

Can I access the presentations online after the event?

There will be a limited selection of sessions made at the Congress, however support material submitted by some speakers will be posted on our website under the relevant session.


I need to cancel, can someone attend in my place?

I have paid but haven't received my e-ticket, what should I do?

Whether you have paid by BACS or Credit card it can take up to 5 days for it to appear in our bank account. If after this time you still haven't receive your e-ticket, please email referencing your name, ticket type, the date you booked and the payment type, so it can trace be traced.
