Opening session: Visions for an interconnected world

The ways in which low-carbon, reliable and sustainable energy will be provided in the future are being designed today. Profound changes in the ways people use and produce energy are underway, and ambitious programmes to increase the contribution of renewables are having an impact on infrastructure planning, including grid interconnections at national and regional levels, and the development of an integrated energy system.

This session will bring together heads of governments and intergovernmental institutions, to shed light on long-term trends and the contribution of hydropower. The speakers will share their views on the changing role of hydropower in the energy mix and the transboundary benefits attained by countries having access to hydropower through shared rivers and interconnections.
