Travel and visas

Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is an international hub, with easy access by road and public transport.

To enter Ethiopia your passport must be valid for at least six months after your date of entry regardless of Nationality, and have at least two un-used pages remaining for any necessary entry and exit stamps that may be issued.

The Ethiopian Government issues visa application approvals (rather than invitation letters); an approval is required before you apply for a business visa from your local Ethiopian Consulate/Embassy.

Please apply for this approval immediately and directly through our local agent in Addis Ababa, Eshi Events, at Please allow up to four weeks for this process: if this is impossible, please contact us urgently.

(If you do not have access to a local Ethiopian Embassy or Consulate, Eshi Events can help you with a ‘special case’ business visa on arrival).

Once you receive this approval YOU can then apply for your business visa at your local Ethiopian Embassy or Consulate.

Business visas are only issued for one month from the date they are processed so please bear your travel dates in mind when applying.

You will need to attach, or include, the following information in your email to Eshi Events:

• A scan of the personal information page(s) in your passport. This should be up to 3MB (jpeg/png file), please ensure it is legible

• Your full name

• Passport number

• Passport valid from and to dates

• Passport country of issue

• The country, town and embassy you will be applying for your visa

• To and from travel dates

• If you live in a different country to where your passport is issued, we need a copy of your resident or work permit.

Please make sure you check your junk folder for replies from Eshi Events.

Bole International Airport is about 5km south-east of Addis Ababa city centre (where the UN Conference Centre and most of the hotels are located). The majority of hotels offer a shuttle service to/from the airport between USD 7 and USD 10 per person one way. Please ask when booking your hotel for more information about this service.

If you take a taxi, it is best to take a yellow taxi. These taxi drivers belong to a taxi association which has a booth at the airport exit. The average cost of a taxi from the airport to the UN Compound area is USD 15.

Alternatively, you can book prior to arrival with a local taxi service:

Letter of invitation

This is not needed for the visa application process to Ethiopia, we will however be able to issue you with a 'Certificate of attendance' at the Congress information desk, if required.
