CEO, Lufubu Power Company
Katai Kachasa graduated with a bachelor of engineering degree (in electrical power and machines) from the University of Zambia in 1980. He started his engineering career in the Zambian mining industry with Roan Copper Mines and later with Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines. He specialised in personnel and materials handling early in his career. He later held various divisional and corporate engineering positions and rose to the position of divisional engineering manager of an integrated mine. After the privitisation of the Zambian mining industry in 2000, he was appointed to the position of consulting electrical engineer for Mopani Copper Mines Plc.
In 2002, Katai left the mining industry and as general manager of Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company Ltd (LHPC), he established the first Independent Power Producer in Zambia. He steered the company through the initial energy sector liberalisation in Zambia, expanding the company installed capacity by nearly fifty percent to 56MW. At the time of his departure in June 2015, he had approximately 400 MW under feasibility study.
In July 2015 assumed the position of CEO of Lufubu Power Company (LPC), an IPP formed to pursue the development of Lufubu river hydro power scheme. Katai is also actively involved in the geographical and energy mix diversification efforts in Zambia.
