LIU Zhenya

Chairman, Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) 

Mr. Liu is Chairman of Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), Chairman of China Electricity Council (CEC), a consolidated organization of China’s power enterprises and institutions, and Chairman of Chinese National Committee of CIGRE. Previous to his current position, Mr. Liu Zhenya has served as Chairman and President of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), with over 40 years of experience in electric power industry. Under his 12 years’ leadership, SGCC has grown to be the world’s largest utility company and ranked the 7th on Fortune Global 500 for 5 consecutive years.

Mr. Liu is a renowned expert in international energy and power sector, a pioneer of Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission in China, a practitioner of strong & smart grid, and the initiator of the concept of Global Energy Interconnection (GEI). Mr. Liu has published many monographs, including  Electric Power and Energy in China (in Chinese and English), Ultra-high Voltage AC&DC Grid (in Chinese, English, and Russian) and Global Energy Interconnection (in Chinese, English and Russian) , which contributed to the development and progress of energy and power sector in both China and the world.

Mr. Liu is the first to propose and strongly push for the development of Ultra High Voltage Transmission, which has enabled China Grid to pioneer the era of UHV grid. Facing the global challenges of energy security, environment pollution, and climate change, he proposed building Global Energy Interconnection (GEI), phasing in clean energy replacement and electricity replacement, and worked to promote these ideas and its materialization. His keynote speeches on GEI at international conferences, his monograph ‘Global Energy Interconnection’, and relevant papers have been widely acknowledged. All these efforts have contributed to GEI development worldwide.   

Mr. Liu holds a Master degree of Engineering. He is a senior engineer with professorship and a senior member of IEEE.
