Mike McWilliams

Head of hydropower, Mott MacDonald

Mike McWilliams is a professional engineer with over 35 years of experience in hydropower. Graduating from Edinburgh University in 1978 with first class honours in civil engineering, he started work in London on hydropower and mining projects.  He has worked in Botswana, Zambia and Malaysia, spending a total of 12 years resident in Africa and Asia early in his career.  He returned to the UK in 1992 with the same firm, leading hydropower teams working on international projects.

Mike took up his current position as head of hydropower for Mott MacDonald in 2011. Mott MacDonald is a USD 2 billion consultancy working across all aspects of infrastructure, including power and renewable energy. His team works on hydro projects in 30 countries, providing technical, environmental, social and commercial services on projects at all stages of development.

Mike’s particular interests are in risk management, power system planning and the commercial aspects of hydropower.  He is currently developing innovative concession models to finance projects that fail under current BOOT arrangements.
