Executive director, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa
Moisés Machava is an executive director of Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), based in Mozambique. He is in charge of the technical field, covering hydropower generation and other support services areas. Mr Machava has worked at HCB since 1995, and was previously the engineering and maintenance department manager.
A qualified electrical engineer, Mr Machava has 22 years of experience working in the hydropower sector as an executive member of the HCB Board. He spent his early career lecturing on power generation at the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, before joining HCB in 1995. Since then, he has been involved in the operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of hydropower generation and transmission facilities at the 2,075 MW Cahora Bassa project, progressing to increasing levels of responsibility before being appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014.
Mr Machava joins the IHA Board with the aim of promoting the development of hydropower potential in a multifaceted approach, covering social, sustainability and economic aspects. He is also committed to the development of capacity, skills and new technologies. He brings with him a full understanding of the hydropower sector in Africa, and the constraints faced by countries such as Mozambique, including the challenges around securing funding for multidimensional projects.
