Associate Director for Research and Innovation, Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre
Pablo Suarez is associate director for research and innovation at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, as well as visiting fellow at Boston University, and honorary senior lecturer at University College London. Pablo holds a Ph.D. in geography and a master’s degree in planning. A water engineer by training, he designed dams and flood management systems in his native Argentina before becoming a humanitarian worker and researcher. He has consulted for the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank, Oxfam, and about twenty other international humanitarian and development organizations, working in more than 60 countries. He has co-designed ‘FUNES’, a digital tool that combines machine learning and Forecast-based Financing for flood risk management downstream of hydropower dams. Piloted in Togo, FUNES won a global innovation award at the 2017 World Government Summit and is scaling up through collaborations with the International Hydropower Association, World Bank, governments, and partners.
