Risk and finance
Hydropower provides reliable electricity production at considerable scale (nine of the world’s ten largest power stations are hydropower) and at a cost that is on average as low, or lower, than that of fossil fuel generation. It does however require considerable investment and, as every site is unique, a level of risk.
Managing risk and identifying solutions for project finance is a key concern of our members. We have surveyed our members on their perceptions of risks from project delay and implementation issues. This is informing our guidance and adding to industry knowledge.
We also participated in the EU-wide 'Macroeconomic Benefits of Hydropower' study with hydropower companies and organisations across the continent. The results demonstrate the key role that hydropower plays in European development. You can read the report here.
