Professor Arun KUMAR

Professor, Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy, Indian Institute of Technology

Professor Arun Kumar is a civil engineer specializing in water resources and hydropower engineering with over four decades of experience.

His vision and leadership led the Hydro and Renewable Energy Department at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee India to grow as centre of excellence in the field of hydropower with notable developments including, hydraulic turbine model testing laboratory, sediment monitoring abrasion measurement laboratory, real time hydropower simulator, pumped storage design and policy, and international educational and training programmes.

Having contributed to hydropower and environmental impact assessment domestically and internationally, capacity building and research and development in hydropower and sustainable pumped storage will be the focus of Arun's contribution to IHA board to increase outreach, contribution and recognition.

Arun Kumar has served as Coordinating Lead Author on Hydropower for IPCC Special Report and contributed to institutional capacity building in African and Asian countries with UN support. He has also worked with collaborators from Canada, UK, Norway, Nepal, Zambia, Sri Lanka, etc. He is Fellow of ASCE and IHA, member of ASME, AWWA, ICID and IEEE, and Life Fellow of Institution of Engineers(I). He served as head of department, MNRE Renewable Chair Professor and on the Board of NHPC Ltd.
