Modernisation

The challenge

As the next generation of hydropower projects are being planned, facilities built in past decades are due for modernisation.

By 2030 over half of the world’s existing hydropower facilities will have undergone or will be due to undergo upgrading and modernisation, according to IHA’s hydropower database.

By 2050, all current hydropower facilities are predicted to require modernisation.

Modernisation goes beyond the business-as-usual replacement and refurbishment of equipment and optimisations to plant operations and maintenance (O&M).

A successful modernisation programme will bring the best technologies from the next generation of hydropower projects to an existing facility to extend its life and power output.

 

Our strategy and action

IHA is supporting the exchange of industry experiences and innovation in modernisation programmes.

We are working closely with IHA members to explore the range of strategies for plant life extension and the adoption of new technologies with a focus on existing facilities.

Throughout 2018, we will develop decision-making guidance for asset management, and build a compendium of case studies illustrating well-established and cutting-edge modernisation methodologies.

Our modernisation work programme will gain insights into how organisations are improving equipment design to provide greater functionality and flexibility within the changing energy system, enhance grid support, and build resilience to climate change.

Members will benefit from briefings and webinars on accepted good practice from leading organisations in the hydropower sector.

In September 2017, IHA’s new Board approved the new Modernisation knowledge programme at its inaugural meeting.

In November 2017, we began to identify industry-leading modernisation approaches and experts in the field.

In December 2017, we identified case studies in different regions of the world with the assistance of Mott MacDonald. A roadmap detailing the steps to the deliverables was prepared.
