Dr Ziping Huang, deputy chief engineer, head of Hydropower and Water Division, POWERCHINA Intl. Group Ltd., has 27 years of professional experience in hydropower planning and design, engineering hydrology, hydraulics, geological and geotechnical engineering in research, numerical modeling, design, contract management, construction supervision and consulting. A graduate of Tsinghua University, Beijing, with a BS and an MSc in hydraulic and water resource engineering, he also obtained an MSc in hydropower development and a PhD in engineering geology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

He was a hydropower and water resources engineer, and had worked as construction supervision engineer for Xikou pumped storage project in China for three years before he went to Norway in 1996. His master's, doctorate, postdoctorate work in Norway deepened his understanding in rock mechanics with numerical modelling analyses. As a geotechnical engineer of Amec Earth & Environment in 2005, he worked for oil sand mining and transportation projects in Canada including soil mechanics related numerical modelling. Since 2006, as project manager and advisor at Norconsult and later at Multiconsult, he combined his numerical modelling expertise using ABAQUS with Norwegian rock engineering practice and worked for several hydropower projects with large caverns and tunnels: Nuozhadu, Xiangjiapa, Jinping II, Guandi, Baihetan, Balandkou, and Xiamen subsea tunnel in China, resulting in cost saving solutions. He completed a feasibility study as project manager for Kaligandaki Koban and Tamakoshi I Hydropower projects in Nepal. As principal engineer - tunnels for Neelum-Jhelum HEP in Pakistan, he was responsible for construction design of tunnels and advices on technical issues in challenge geological conditions in Himalaya region.

Since 2015, he has been intensively and extensively engaged in POWERCHINA’s global hydropower and water projects, responsible for providing consulting services, for technical management, for better communication with the clients and the partners, and for the technical institution building up.
