Glen Earrach Energy

Glen Earrach Energy (GEE) is a 2 GW, 34 GWh Pumped Storage Hydro project located on the Balmacaan Estate near Loch Ness. This scheme is set to be a key contributor to the UK’s clean power ambitions and play a critical role in balancing the electricity grid. The project’s unique geographical benefits also ensure that it will deliver greater water efficiency – meaning it can generate and store more energy, using less water than all other projects on Loch Ness combined. GEE was founded in 2023 and is headquartered at 50 Lothian Road, Festival Square, Edinburgh, Scotland, EH3 9WJ.

Glen Earrach Energy is joining the IHA to deepen our ties with similar projects and demonstrate our commitment to the global need for hydropower. We understand the collective need to meet the challenge of net zero and are eager to promote the importance of hydropower in achieving this.

We are proud of our proactive and dedicated approach to community benefits, and have been engaging directly with local communities since April 2024. Their input has already helped shape key elements of the project, from early design changes to the development of our long-term community benefit approach. In March 2025, we launched a consultation to seek views on how our Community Benefit Fund – which could be worth over £20 million per year – should be structured, governed and allocated in line with local priorities. Our approach will ensure the project’s community benefit fund is truly community-led.

We are similarly committed to ensuring that our project brings long-lasting environmental benefits to the Scottish Highlands, and understand the clear need for the sustainable use of natural resources.
