2025 Board candidate

Joël Thibert

Vice-president of Energy Planning and Strategy, Hydro-Québec.

My name is Joël Thibert, Vice-president of Energy Planning and Strategy at Hydro-Québec. I'm submitting my candidacy as Hydro-Québec's representative on IHA board. I spent 10 years at McKinsey, advising industry leaders on topics ranging from Resource Productivity to Capital Allocation and Strategy. I hold a Ph.D. in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University. My research focused on economic and regional planning.

At Hydro-Quebec, I handle integrated resource planning and enterprise strategy. This involves assessing energy needs for the next 25 years, evaluating energy transition pathways, and pushing for innovation and performance. I also monitor external factors that impact the energy transition and connect with peers worldwide. IHA has shown that hydropower can be clean and sustainable through initiatives like the San Jose Declaration and hydropower sustainability standards. We commit to these principles and aim to influence others to do the same.

Speed and sustainability go hand in hand when developing hydro projects. In these uncertain times, it's crucial to stay committed to building a cleaner world through the expansion of hydropower and other renewable energy sources, while engaging local communities. That’s what Hydro-Québec is doing, and I believe we can be a source of inspiration for the world.
