Sharbini Suhaili

Group Chief Executive Officer, Sarawak Energy

Sharbini Suhaili is the Group Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Energy, a vertically integrated power utility and Malaysia’s largest renewable energy developer with a strong vision for sustainable energy.

Since assuming leadership in 2016, Sharbini has steered the company towards becoming a regional leader in sustainable energy, with a focus on hydropower and cross-border energy integration.

Under his leadership, Sarawak Energy has achieved major milestones in full electrification, deep decarbonisation, and regional energy integration. Central to Sarawak’s ambition to become a renewable energy powerhouse—with a goal of achieving 10GW of generation capacity by 2030—is its strategic focus on sustainable hydropower.

Sarawak’s major hydropower plants - Bakun (2,520MW), Murum (944MW), and Batang Ai (108MW) - have enabled a more than 70% reduction in carbon emissions from the power sector while maintaining some of the most competitive electricity tariffs in Southeast Asia. The Baleh Hydroelectric Project, which is currently under construction will add 1,285MW of renewable hydropower to the grid once commissioned.

Sharbini has also championed cross-border energy projects such as the Sarawak-West Kalimantan exchange, Sarawak-Sabah Interconnection, and prospective interconnections to Singapore, Peninsular Malaysia, and Brunei. These initiatives form the foundation for the Borneo Grid, a key contribution to the ASEAN Power Grid vision.

An advocate for sustainable hydropower, he serves on the International Hydropower Association (IHA) Board and furthers the global energy transition through roles in the Energy Transition Malaysia Alliance, World Energy Council, and Singapore Management University's International Advisory Council.

A former Royal Dutch Shell scholar, Sharbini holds an Engineering (Hons) degree from the University of Leeds and an MBA from Henley Management College, UK.
