Costa Rica: 100% renewable with hydropower

Costa Rica was one of the first countries in the world to produce its electricity from 100% renewable sources. Two thirds of the energy generated by their national electricity supplier, Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), comes from hydropower.

This renewable transition was accomplished in part through the development of the Reventazón hydropower project, the largest of its kind in Central America, financed by both national and international banks.

In collaboration with ICE, IHA and ITN Productions produced a film about hydropower in Costa Rica which was premiered at the 2021 World Hydropower Congress.

Featuring interviews with Minister of Environment and Energy, Dr Andrea Meza and CEO of ICE, Irene Cañas Díaz, the film explored the role hydropower plays in delivering responsible and sustainable energy for the entire country.

The Government of Costa Rica and the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad are hosts of the World Hydropower Congress.
