Malaysia’s largest hydropower developer and renewable energy provider Sarawak Energy announced as Strategic Partner for the 2023 World Hydropower Congress.

Sarawak Energy is the latest partner to be announced for World Hydropower Congress in Bali this October.

Sarawak Energy is a vertically integrated power utility with the vision to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for Sarawak by meeting Southeast Asia’s need for renewable energy. Its hydropower delivers reliable, renewable and affordable electricity to customers in Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo.

“The world is in a climate crisis and energy industry stakeholders must intensify efforts to work together collaboratively towards a more sustainable energy future,” says Datu Sharbini Suhaili, Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer.

“The 2023 World Hydropower Congress, organised for the first time in Indonesia, offers a tremendous opportunity for stakeholders from around the world to come together and advance the cause of sustainable hydropower in the region. Sarawak has been harnessing our hydropower potential to benefit our people and the environment for the past 40 years.”

The Congress’s aim is to advance sustainable hydropower to power sustainable growth. In Bali, decision-makers and leaders from around the world will come together and make high-level policy statements, recommendations and commitments.

After commissioning their first hydropower plant in 1985, Sarawak’s customers today enjoy globally competitive tariffs as well as a predominantly renewable generation mix. Sarawak Energy currently has three major hydropower plants – 108MW Batang Ai; 2,400MW Bakun; and 944MW Murum – with the 1,285MW Baleh due for commissioning towards the latter part of this decade. Sarawak is working with Indonesian partners to build the proposed 1,375MW Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Project in Indonesian Borneo.

Sarawak Energy is also supporting the wider Borneo and ASEAN grids to foster a more integrated and resilient energy future for the region.

“Sarawak Energy is doing as much as any single company in the world to deliver the San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower, so we are delighted to welcome them as a Strategic Partner for the World Hydropower Congress,” says Eddie Rich, IHA Chief Executive Officer. “Sarawak Energy is committed to progressing a renewable energy mix to drive growth and improve lives in the region.”

The 2023 World Hydropower Congress will be held on 31 October – 2 November at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre. It is co-hosted by the Government of Indonesia, the national electricity company PLN and IHA and forms part of the ASEAN Chairmanship Programme.
