Upstream Tech

Upstream Tech is a mission-driven environmental technology company founded in 2016 and headquartered in the United States. Its flagship water management product, HydroForecast, delivers AI-driven inflow forecasting with short-term, seasonal, and annual insights — helping hydropower operators navigate climate volatility, ensure grid stability, and maximise the value of every drop of water.

We are joining IHA because hydropower is at the heart of everything we do, and IHA is where the global hydropower community connects to share knowledge and shape the sector's future. As HydroForecast expands internationally, particularly across Europe, becoming part of that community is a natural and long-overdue step.

A milestone we're proud of: HydroForecast has forecasted in 18 countries across six continents, having launched in Norway, Germany, Japan, and Brazil in 2025 alone, alongside continued growth in Spain, Portugal, France, Iceland, and beyond. Each deployment is tailored to the basin's specific geography and market structure, with the dashboard available in multiple languages to support international operators.

On sustainability: as our climate warms and hydrological patterns shift, traditional physics-based forecasting models are becoming less reliable. HydroForecast replaces historical averages with theory-guided AI, delivering catchment-specific insights that help operators capture peak price windows in volatile markets — from ENTSO-E in Europe to CAISO in California — while minimising spills, optimising generation timing, and improving trading accuracy.

Trusted by global hydropower leaders (including ENGIE, Brookfield Renewable, Landsvirkjun, Evolugen, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation), HydroForecast is built by a team of PhD hydrologists and machine learning engineers working at the frontier of AI hydrology.
