The International Hydropower Association’s 2025/26 Annual Report, Mobilising for energy security in a changing world, reflects a year in which hydropower moved further towards the centre of global energy discussions. As energy systems face rising pressure from growing demand, geopolitical shocks, climate impacts and the rapid expansion of variable renewables, hydropower is increasingly recognised as essential to strengthening energy security through the reliability and resilience it provides.

Throughout 2025, IHA strengthened its role as a global convenor and advocate for sustainable hydropower. This included hosting the International Forum on Pumped Storage in Paris, expanding the Global Alliance for Pumped Storage (GAPS), and delivering a record-reaching edition of the World Hydropower Outlook. The Annual Report also highlights continued progress in sustainability through collaboration with the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance, and growing uptake of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard across projects worldwide.

Alongside a review of IHA’s activities across advocacy, research, sustainability and member engagement, the report sets out priorities for the years ahead. With momentum building towards the 2027 World Hydropower Congress in Sydney, IHA’s focus remains centred on pumped storage, modernisation and sustainability, helping position hydropower as a cornerstone of energy security, system resilience and renewable integration in a changing world.
