Join the International Hydropower Association (IHA) for a panel discussion on sustainable hydropower and the green recovery, with guest speakers:

  • Mr Malcolm Turnbull, former Prime Minister of Australia
  • Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA)
  • Mr Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

The panel will be chaired by Mr Eddie Rich, CEO of IHA.

Date: Wednesday, 3 February 2021   Time: 10.00am-11.00am GMT

The IEA estimates that the world needs an additional 850 GW of installed hydropower capacity by 2040 to meet the Paris Agreement targets and the energy-related Sustainable Development Goals. IHA calculates the required investment as US$100 billion a year, however current investment levels are around half of this figure.

With low-cost variable renewables taking an increasingly large share of electricity generation, reliable decarbonised electricity systems will need energy sources that provide flexibility and storage. Hydropower is also cost-efficient: IRENA highlights that it is the lowest-cost source of electricity in most markets over the course of a project’s life and directly employs around 2 million people worldwide.

So how should hydropower be reflected in economic stimulus packages and how should the industry position itself to advance the energy transition? Join us to hear the insights of three key players at the international level.
