Pioneering India’s clean energy future: Adani Green Energy Limited joins IHA membership

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), part of the Adani Group, has joined the International Hydropower Association (IHA) as a member, bringing with it one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy portfolios.

Headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, AGEL is playing a lead role in India’s clean energy transformation. Founded in 2015, the company has rapidly scaled up its operations to become the country’s largest renewable energy developer, with more than 12GW of operational capacity in solar and wind. By 2030, AGEL aims to commission 50GW of total renewable energy capacity, including wind, solar, hybrid and pumped storage hydropower (PSH).

AGEL is currently developing the world’s largest single-location renewable energy park in Khavda, Gujarat, with a total capacity of 30GW. The company’s integrated approach to clean energy deployment – combining solar, wind and energy storage through PSH at scale – positions it at the heart of India’s strategy to meet growing energy demand while cutting emissions.

Hydropower is playing an increasingly important role in AGEL’s strategy. Through a series of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across several Indian states, AGEL is advancing a pipeline of over 26GW in PSH capacity. The company is also expanding internationally, with a signed MoU to develop 5000 MW hydropower projects in Bhutan, with the first, a 570MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project.

These projects are critical to delivering energy storage and grid flexibility in India as the country rapidly expands its renewable power system and reduces its reliance on fossil fuels. AGEL is also committed to broader sustainability goals, including sustainable water management, zero waste to landfill certification, and ambitious reductions in carbon emissions.

“We are focused on building a sustainable and resilient energy system that serves future generations,” says Naresh Telgu, Chief Operating Officer, Hydro and PSP at AGEL. “Hydropower, and especially pumped storage, is an essential component in this journey – enabling greater integration of renewable energy, supporting grid stability. At Adani Green Energy, we are committed to harnessing the full potential of hydropower and pumped storage to drive sustainable growth and contribute to a cleaner, greener future for our mother earth.

“Becoming a member of IHA reflects our commitment to international collaboration and leadership in the energy transition. We look forward to engaging with peers around the world to exchange insights and promote sustainable development in hydropower.”

AGEL joins IHA’s global community of members working to advance the role of sustainable hydropower in delivering climate goals. As the company scales its PSH portfolio, it brings valuable experience in project development at scale, system integration and climate resilience.

Eddie Rich, CEO of IHA, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Adani Green Energy Limited to IHA. AGEL exemplifies the bold ambition and innovation needed to achieve net zero. Its major investment in pumped storage – the world’s water battery – highlights the critical role this technology plays in enabling a 100% clean power system. By leading the way toward the global goal of 1,500 GW of storage capacity by 2030, AGEL sets a powerful example for the entire industry. We look forward to supporting Adani’s work as it builds momentum in India and beyond.”
