Pumped for Power: Aurecon becomes latest IHA members

Australian company Aurecon has joined the IHA as members. The engineering, project management and consulting firm started in 1934 as MacDonald Wagner and today has offices spanning the Asia-Pacific region.

Aurecon looks to provide sustainable solutions to problems, through knowledge sharing, championing good practices and training. It works across the renewable energy chain, including renewable energy generation, storage, network transmission and distribution, the electrification of industrial loads and transportation and hydrogen production for industry or export.

The company has a large focus on sustainable hydropower, currently delivering the Borumba Pumped Storage Hydropower Project alongside its partner AFRY in Queensland. Upon completion, this project will become a cornerstone of the state’s energy transformation; providing resilient and secure energy supply of up to 2,000 MW of electricity for 24-hours, with storage capacity of 48,000 MWh.

It has been named one of the most innovative companies by the Australian Financial Review BOSS Magazine for the past eight years.

By joining IHA membership, Aurecon hopes to continue to fly the flag for sustainable hydropower through collaboration.

Mohsen Moeni, Hydropower Leader Australia, Aurecon commented: “Highly reliable long-duration pumped storage hydropower plays a critical role in stabilising an electricity grid that has high levels of sustainable but intermittent renewable energy. It complements the typically shorter duration storage provided by utility-scale batteries, allowing stored energy to be released into our electricity grid when needed.”

Eddie Rich, IHA CEO, stated: “It is great to have Aurecon join IHA. The Borumba Pumped Storage Project is a leading example of the mass-scale storage projects that will be needed all over the world to ensure secure, reliable, flexible, clean energy systems. We look forward to welcoming their expertise as pumped storage development accelerates around the world.”
