ReHydro Webinar: Barriers and Drivers in Modernising European Hydropower Fleets
18 March 2026: 14:00 – 15:15 (CET)
ReHydro is a European Union funded project demonstrating how European hydropower can be refurbished and modernised to be fit for the future energy system - respecting sustainability requirements and societal needs in a climate change context.
Europe’s hydropower plants are getting older and the demand for sustainable, flexible energy is rising.
In this webinar, we’ll share what we’ve been hearing from owners and operators across Europe about what’s driving refurbishment and upgrades and what barriers they face.
This webinar will cover:
• Findings from the ReHydro survey 'Key barriers and drivers in modernising hydropower fleets across Europe'.
• What ReHydro’s wider analysis says about how flexibility needs, market and policy changes, licensing and environmental requirements are influencing upgrade decisions.
• A live expert discussion with the D-HYDROFLEX project, a parallel EU funded research project focusing on digital solutions, on synergies and divergences with their earlier study.
• A panel with two European hydropower operators - EDF and LYSE - sharing hands-on experience from their own portfolios and project pipelines.
